Major Types of UPSC Exams

UPSC conducts various national-level examinations throughout the year to recruit candidates for top administrative and technical positions. The prominent exams include:

• Civil Services Examination (CSE): For prestigious administrative roles like IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IPS (Indian Police Service), and IFS (Indian Foreign Service).
• National Defence Academy (NDA) & Naval Academy (NA): For 12th pass students looking to join the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
• Combined Defence Services (CDS): For graduates aiming to join the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers Training Academy.
• Engineering Services Examination (ESE): For engineering graduates to join the Indian Engineering Services (IES).
• Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF): For the recruitment of Assistant Commandants in BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB.
• Combined Medical Services (CMS): For medical graduates (MBBS) to work as Medical Officers in various Government organizations.
• Indian Forest Service (IFoS): Conducted concurrently with the Civil Services prelims for recruitment into the forest services.

General Educational Qualifications

The eligibility criteria for UPSC exams depend largely on the specific service you are applying for:

• 12th Pass (10+2): Eligible for the NDA & NA Examination. (Note: Physics and Mathematics are required for Air Force and Naval wings).
• Graduation (Any Discipline): Eligible for CSE, CDS, and CAPF (Assistant Commandant). Final year students can also apply for the prelims.
• Engineering Degree: Required for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE/IES).
• Medical Degree (MBBS): Mandatory for the Combined Medical Services (CMS) Examination.
• Science/Engineering Graduation: Specific subjects (like Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology, Agriculture, or Engineering) are required for the Indian Forest Service (IFoS).

General Exam Pattern and Selection Process

Most prestigious UPSC exams follow a rigorous multi-stage selection process designed to test a candidate's academic prowess, analytical skills, and personality.

UPSC Civil Services (CSE) Pattern:

• Phase I (Preliminary Exam): Two objective-type papers (General Studies I and CSAT). CSAT is qualifying in nature (requires 33%). There is a negative marking of 1/3rd for wrong answers.
• Phase II (Main Exam): Nine subjective/descriptive papers, including one Essay paper, four General Studies papers, two Optional Subject papers, and two qualifying language papers.
• Phase III (Personality Test / Interview): A comprehensive interview panel evaluates the candidate's personality, leadership qualities, and suitability for a career in public service.

NDA / CDS Pattern:

Written examination consisting of objective-type questions in Mathematics, English, and General Knowledge, followed by an extensive 5-day SSB (Services Selection Board) Interview involving psychological tests, group tasks, and a personal interview.

Age Limit & Number of Attempts

UPSC strictly defines age limits and the maximum number of attempts allowed per candidate.

• Civil Services Exam (CSE): General category candidates must be between 21 and 32 years of age and are permitted 6 attempts. OBC candidates get 9 attempts (up to 35 years), and SC/ST candidates get unlimited attempts (up to 37 years).
• NDA: Candidates are generally required to be between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age. (Unmarried male and female candidates).
• CDS & CAPF: Usually between 20 and 25 years, depending on the specific academy and post.
