Major Types of SSC Exams

The Staff Selection Commission conducts several nationwide exams annually. The major exams include:

• SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level): For graduates to fill Group B & C posts like Inspector, Sub-Inspector, Auditor, and Assistant Section Officer.
• SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level): For 12th pass candidates for posts like LDC, JSA, PA, SA, and DEO.
• SSC MTS (Multi-Tasking Staff): For 10th pass candidates for non-technical Group C posts.
• SSC GD (General Duty) Constable: For 10th pass candidates for constable posts in CAPFs, NIA, SSF, and Assam Rifles.
• SSC CPO (Central Police Organization): For graduates for Sub-Inspector posts in Delhi Police and CAPFs.
• SSC JE (Junior Engineer): For Diploma/Degree holders in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering.
• SSC Stenographer (Grade C & D): For 12th pass candidates with shorthand skills.

General Educational Qualifications

The educational qualification varies strictly according to the specific SSC examination:

• 10th Pass (Matriculation): Eligible for SSC MTS and SSC GD Constable.
• 12th Pass (Higher Secondary): Eligible for SSC CHSL and SSC Stenographer.
• Graduation (Bachelor's Degree): Eligible for SSC CGL and SSC CPO. Certain specialized posts in CGL (like Junior Statistical Officer) require specific subjects in graduation.
• Engineering Diploma/Degree: Required exclusively for SSC Junior Engineer (JE) posts.

General Exam Pattern and Question Structure

While exact exam patterns differ, most SSC examinations follow a computer-based test (CBT) format comprising multiple tiers.

Common Tier-I Question Pattern:

The preliminary stage (Tier-I) for exams like CGL, CHSL, and MTS generally includes 4 sections with equal weightage:

• General Intelligence & Reasoning: Topics like analogies, coding-decoding, blood relations, and non-verbal reasoning.
• General Awareness: Current affairs, history, geography, polity, economics, and general science.
• Quantitative Aptitude: Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and data interpretation.
• English Comprehension: Grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and error spotting.

Note: Negative marking is uniformly applicable across all SSC CBT exams (usually 0.50 or 0.25 marks per wrong answer).

Age Limit & Relaxations

The general age limits are set between 18 to 32 years depending on the post. For instance, MTS is typically 18-25 years, while CGL ranges from 18-32 years for various posts.

Age relaxations are provided as per government norms: 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST, and 10 years for PwD candidates.
